Palace on the Isle
Back to all places
The palace on the island, also known as the Baths Palace, is a classicist palace located in the center of Łazienki Park, the former residence of King Stanisław August Poniatowski, located on a beautiful lake island. In 1766, King Stanislaus Augustus bought the property and turned the bathing pavilion into a classicist summer residence with an English garden.
At the end of World War II, the retreating Germans destroyed the interior of the palace and drilled holes in it in preparation for destruction. However, the plan was never implemented. The palace exhibits paintings and works of art from the collection of about 140 kings. Architectural attractions include an ornate ballroom and 17th-century marble reliefs depicting scenes from the metamorphoses of Ovid, which adorn the original bathhouse that formed the basis of the palace.
Prince Stanisław Herakliusz Lubomirski, a notable 17th-century figure, had the Dutch architect Tylman van Gameren design a baroque bathing house. When King Stanisław August Poniatowski took over the property, the building was redesigned by court architects Domenico Merlini and Johann Christian Kammsetzer.
